A question for fantasy lovers…

I’ve had someone ask –  if they liked King Rolen’s Kin, what should they read next.

It seemed like the perfect opportunity to ask readers for their opnion so I’m throwing it open to you.

What authors/fantasy trilogies would you recommend for someone who loved the KRK trilogy?

  1. I’d recommend Alison Goodman, Pamela Freeman, Lian Hearn, Alison Croggon, Celine Kiernan, and me!

  2. It depends what they really enjoyed about the series- personally I thouht the pacing was brilliant. I am hard pressed to suggest a recent fantasy title that matches it in that regard
. If we are going for original settings and good pace I would go with The Creature Court trilogy.

I would recommend The Watergivers trilogy by Glenda Larke, or the Kushiel series by Jacqueline Carey. Kushiel’s Dart is the first book, and it’s tough to get into at first but stick with it, you won’t be dissapointed. The Kushiel series also deals with some mature themes so it may not be for all ages.

Naomi Novik and Ken Scholes also have great series going…

  4. Richard Stein

They are not really fantasy novels … but I hooked into Lois McMaster Bujold’s “Miles Vorkosigan” series of books and enjoyed them.

Again not sure it they fall into fantasy, but Marianne de Pierres “Pasish Plessis” novels were also a good read.

Gosh, the things we do to pass the time waiting for Rowena’s next series of books 😉

  5. I reckon the Empire trilogy by Janny Wurts and Raymond Feist would be a good one to follow up with. Possibly Tansy Rayner Roberts’ Creature Court trilogy too? 🙂 Karen Miller’s Godspeaker trilogy? Seconding Glenda Larke suggestions too 🙂

  6. Katti

I recommend Brent Weeks: The Night Angel Trilogy!! 🙂

    Hello there! Great question 😉

I read all kind of fantasy, but I loved KRK so I’ll put here some other authors/books I like. Maybe you’ll like them too.

Adrian Tchaikovsky, Shadows of the Apt (series)
    Brandon Sanderson, Mistborn trilogy
Trudi Canavan, The Black Magician Trilogy
    Peter V. Brett, Demon Cycle
Juliet Marillier, Wildwood Dancing and Cybele’s Secret
    Maria V Snyder, Poison Study
    Cornelia Funke, Inkheart
    Alan Campbell, Deepgate Codex Trilogy
    J.K.Rowling, Harry Potter Series
Joe Abercrombie, The First Law Trilogy

Well some of my favorite fantasy books, I know most of them are not similar to KRK in the part of the royal family and all, but I love them like I love KRK, so maybe you will too! =)
And if I remember some more I’ll add them to this list lol I’m not home so I must be overlooking some good ones 😛

  8. Richard Stein

Can’t help noticing that the recommendations for female fantasy authors are outnumbering the men by just over two to one. 😉

I would agree with Katti’s reccomendation for the night angel trilogy by brent weeks. He aslo has another book, that is part one of a series, called the black prism. I just finished the first book of the game of thrones series, and bought the rest when I was barley half way through. I would reccomend those as well for those who have not read them yet. They give different p.o.v. like krk. Although, as much as I like them I would gladly put them down for king byrens kin when that comes out. So with that being said if you would like to just mail all the new books to my home rowena, I would not argue. Not for one minute. That’s a sacrafice I am willing to make.

  10. Sarah

I would recommend the Green Rider series by Kristen Britain. My only issue is she has at least 1 more book in the series if not more and she waits about 4+ years inbetween each release which is extremely irritating. Regardless they are amazing books and well worth the wait.

  11. You know I’m a HUGE Kate Elliott fan (Spirit Walker Series and CrossRoads Series) and seriously Jennifer Fallon fan (Demon Child, Tidelords), more fantastic Australian stuff from Rhonda Roberts (Gladiatrix, Hoodwink….just awesome, not SFF, but awesome) and Carol Berg (Light House Duet and Novels of Collegia Magica…all 3!!) I’ve ‘read Brett yet’ totally fantastic and Alan Campbell Deepgate Codex very good) also there’s one more Greg Keyes (Kingdom of Thorn and Bone was great too)
